Hmmm… TV or Work?
For an entrepreneur no day is the same and our energy levels can vary from hour to hour depending on what we’re doing. It’s definitely hard to work and be productive non-stop throughout the entire day. Heck, if you can do that, then you’re a machine.
Each day when I wakeup I write down my goals in my yellow legal pad. I literally have a stack of pads on my desk filled with daily goals that I have written down. I usually get through all of my goals for the day, but sometimes I get caught up in other things.
My biggest distraction would have to be my love of reading online content, notably blogs and e-books. Sometimes instead of focusing on my goals, I’ll be using my energy to read other blogs. But I don’t feel too bad since I consider my main goal as innovating and reading definitely helps me become more creative (well that’s my excuse, what’s yours…hehe).
But there are other things that I’m sure many of us do that suck us away from getting our work done. Television is definitely a prime example. From time to time I’ll walk upstairs and there will be something interesting on TV, and what do you know, I’ll take a seat and before you know it 2 hours has gone by.
Another distraction or energy sucker can be from using instant messages to chat with your friends – that’s a big one. So try to close down your instant messenger for a few hours of the day so you can actually get some work done.
You have to know when to actually focus on work when your energy levels are at their peak, and when to relax and just chill out when you’re running on empty. If you don’t figure that out, then you’ll never really accomplish anything.
But at the end of the day, no matter how much you slack-off or don’t follow your daily schedule to every exact point, if you can get all your work done then you’re OK in my book. Just be aware of the things that draw you from what needs to get done and make sure that you’re in control of your goals.

Great post David. The whole IM thing was a huge killer for me. I’ve gotten to the point now where I basically never sign on - the people I keep in touch with will email or call. There are just too many distractions with checking away messages, profiles, etc. I definitely have noticed an increase in productivity. I keep my SportsLizard IM account signed on for biz but my personal acct stays off
