MBA for Me? Nah

MBADo you have an MBA from a business school? If you do, then congratulations! I don’t have an MBA from a business school; heck, I don’t have one at all. Actually, I have a degree in English and Literature from a Tier II university in New York City.

What’s my point? Well, some of you may be wondering if having an MBA is a prerequisite to becoming an entrepreneur. If that’s what you’re wondering, then throw that thought into the garbage, right now.

I’ll say it again, you don’t need an MBA to be an entrepreneur and create a successful business. Having one is definitely great and can probably help you get a job in the “corporate” world if that’s what you want, but it’s not a must – far from one.

If you’re in college and majoring in, say, English, math, accounting, philosophy, whatever, then don’t think that you’re limited in what you can do as an entrepreneur because of the degree you hold – that’s just nonsense.

If you’re out there making moves, making things happen, and working at something everyday, then you’re getting an “MBA” right now – everyday! The best business school is not the one inside of a classroom, it’s the one that you live everyday of your life as an entrepreneur creating and running a business. It’s that simple.

MBA stands for Master of Business Administration. Well if you’re currently building a business, then you’re becoming a master of your own business. You don’t need a degree to become a “Master” of anything, just look in the mirror, silly.

Don’t get me wrong, having an MBA is cool (I guess), but “not” having one may be even cooler. One risk of getting an MBA may be the homogenization factor of shaping everyone into this perfect identical mold of what your business professors think you should do, say, eat, and create. Or maybe not, what do I know?

So relax, study what you want to study in school; get a degree in whatever you like. And remember, entrepreneurship isn’t – and never has been – about the degree you hold or the college you attend, it’s about what’s in your heart, mind, and body.

I major in the Entrepreneurship at Babson College (the world’s leader in entrepreneur education) and….I completely agree with you!

Babson is great and I am thankful for having the opportunity to major in entrepreneurship at such a great place. But the bulk of the value even here has to do with the people you meet and the environment, not necessarily what you learn in the classroom.

Entrepreneurs come from all walks of life and they definitely do not need an entrepreneurship degree to be successful, never mind an MBA.

lol, I know. In my high school marketing class some years back one girl asked the teacher: “Do you have to have a college degree to start a business?” I almost burst out laughing :)

Exactly. As long as our heads are in the right places and we have our goals straight, then that’s worth more than any degree, in my mind. It’s all about making moves and educating ourselves — not wasting time.

Having just recently (as in today) finished my joint Law/MBA degree from the University of Toronto and having been involved in 2 start-ups prior to that, I agree with your point that an MBA is not necessary. However with that said I think that two points are worth mentioning. First an MBA is a great complimentary degree to something else; in my case either becoming an Intellectual Property lawyer or eventually heading off to find my own start-up venture, the MBA combined with a Law degree is something I consider very valuable. There are things you learn in an MBA program that you can learn on the fly in a business of your own, but it’s not just the classroom experience that you take away. It’s the contacts, the networking and the ability to interface with people who have already been out there working (most MBA programs require somewhere between 2-5 years of work experience) and have decided to go back to school for one reason or another. Second, I have always felt that an MBA like any other course is a self-development tool. There are those who will graduate with me this year and feel that they did not get much out of their MBA, but I think that is because they came in with the wrong attitude. An MBA is not so you can jump 2 rungs on the corporate ladder; it is a program that helps you work through the thinking process of business. Like anything else it has its good points and bad, but if you come in knowing what you might like to do after school it can be a great way to develop your skills in a specific area.

I would never think that someone with an MBA is more qualified than someone without one, but without one I believe you need to be the type of person willing to go out there and get the life experience you speak of. I’m happy to have my joint JD/MBA, but given the opportunity would I do an MBA on its own? Probably not. The 2 years you spend getting one are probably better off spent actually working and honing your skills outside the classroom.

Keep up the great work on the blog, very interested to see what happens with your Classhelpers.com site.

Michael, awesome comment. You seem to be on the right track with your goals. I am glad that you realize that only having an MBA isn’t the clear path to success – many people don’t recognize or understand that, and people like are vital when it comes to spreading the word.

I wish you the best of luck with your degree and your future success.

[…] Michael G. Cohen has an MBA. Yup, that’s right, an MBA. As you may know, I’m not the biggest fan of telling all entrepreneurs to go out and get an MBA. It’s just not for everyone. But wow, if you did put in the time and effort to get one, then right on! All the best! Mike doesn’t only have his MBA, but he’s on the brink of becoming a lawyer. Wow, what a dude. I gotta give it to you, Mike, I’m impressed and I, along with the rest of the network, wish you the best with the bar exam. […]
