Ditch the suit!

Today I was reminded of how much I actually hate business suits after I wore one for a formal meeting. I don’t know if it’s just me, but I feel so suffocated and constrained when in a suit. That tight-ass tie around my neck is like a chain cutting off my bloodstream.

I’m sure that some young entrepreneurs feel that they have to wear a tie to look professional, but I really can’t agree with that. Personally, I love my hat, blazer, and flip-flops. When I am comfortable with what I am wearing, then I am off to a great start in the day.

You’re an entrepreneur, so do what you do best: be creative! Have fun and wear whatever makes you happy. If it’s those bright pink Hawaii shorts, then go for it! If it’s that crazy red blazer, then rock that! Dress to impress yourself, not to fit into the status quo.

I mean, com’on, how creative can you get with a suit, tie, and black shoes?

Funny though, I remember wearing a suit - the part that sucked most was the tie, that thing around my neck makes me feel uptight… Talking with some employers or clients with casual attire just made the whole environment much more chilled ;)

I have a split opinion on this subject. I can agree with the fact that I’m at my best when I’m in the clothes that I want to be wearing. However, there are also many situations where I feel better about myself and more comfortable when I am dressed up, only because I don’t have to worry about whether or not I’m sticking out like a soar thumb.

In the end, it all really comes down to what field of business you’re in. As a web developer/internet marketing consultant, I rarely ever dress up in a full suit and tie, but nearly any professional situation at least warrants a nice pair of shoes, khakis/dress pants, and a casual button-down shirt. In my opinion, this is the best mix between appearing professional, down to earth, unique, and best of all - comfortable enough mentally and physically.

I hate suits, particularly the tie. Even if I have a big meeting, 9 times out of 10 I don’t rock a tie…I just can’t do it.

My entrepreneur outfit: polo shirt and khaki pants/shorts…maybe rock a funny t-shirt here and there.

Well you guys have it easy: it’s always pants, shirt and tie or no tie. For women it’s a whole different ball game: skirt, pants, dress; blouse, button-down shirt, tank; heals, flats, boots etc… so many choises.

I wish I was a guy, really :)

Liana: Yeah..you’re right..you girls have it bad! Ha, j/k. I’m sure that it’s not that bad. Anyways…I’m sure that you sneak in super casual stuff from time to time.

Anthony: Yup, at the end of the day, it’s all about what makes you happy and best for the specific situation — right on!

Josh: Yeah, those darn ties are the things that really kill me!

Dan: Cool, I also like to rock the polos as well. Gotta love Banana Republic!

I use to wear a suit 3-4 times out of the week on campus. I hated it… its too HOT in Florida!

Dennis: why DID you wear a suit on campus?

You guys are almost right. You should wear what your clients expect you to wear.

Nah… I’d rather wear what I am most comfortable with — it’s all about keeping it real with yourself. In the end, clients will respect you more for being an individual, not a zombie.
