Capture Your Ideas

Ever get one of those ideas that just hit you so damn hard? They tend to come at night before you go to sleep and they leave you restless in bed sorting out all the little intricacies and subtleties of the novel idea.

It’s like you mind goes on auto-drive and just starts mapping-out the idea in your head. It’s really quite an amazing experience. Some people such as Napoleon Hill describe this experience as the sixth sense – the sense of the imagination.

I think that it’s very important for entrepreneurs to allow their minds to wonder when hit with these unexpected rushes of creativity. The thing is, you never know when they are going to hit you and it’s likely that you’ll be involved in doing something when it happens. Not all people get them at night.

If that’s the case, then it’s best to write down as much of the experience and you can recall as soon as it hits, and if you’re too busy to spend some alone time to begin the mental mapping-out process of the idea, then jot it down and try to focus in on it when you have more time later on in the day.

I can’t stress this enough: WRITE EVERYTHING DOWN. Really do yourself a favor and take the time to put your ideas down on paper. Believe me, something as simple as writing an idea down on paper can lead to the implementation of an enormously successful business – and it all began with those few notes that you took that day.

I’m a big fan of writing down ideas in a notebook, but a folder stuffed with blank paper will work just a fine. It really doesn’t matter what you write on and how you do it, just do it.

Good ideas are too precious to just let go. So when they come, capture them!

How do you capture your ideas?

[…] Funny that David has a very similar part to what I was writing just the other day and planned on finishing up today. The point is very simple, ideas can strike at any time or anywhere you are. So if you want to be able to capitalize on an idea that strikes you there are more than a few ways you can do so. […]

Sound advice David.

And to think, some people think “ideas are worthless.” I think they’re nuts, and I did a post about it just recently, “Ideas are NOT Worthless.” Had I read your post here I probably would have linked to it to help support my counter-argument to what so many people say: “ideas are worthless.”

I write them down.

I also talk to people about them almost immediately. Why? Because they’ll give you instant feedback, help you flesh out the idea and keep it top-of-mind as you continue the dialogue.

Ben, yeah ideas are definitely never worthless. The idea is always the starting point — the spark that makes everything happen! Indeed, it’s all about bouncing your ideas off of other people and making them even stronger — right on!

What do you do after writing them all down, I have notes everywhere and don’t think I will ever get to them.

@Daniel

I just keep a record of all my ideas even though I don’t implement all of them; they are good to keep around because they can inspire you to many other things — NEVER throw them away.
