It’s not “WORK” it’s a LIFESTYLE

A few days ago around 11:30PM a close friend of mine asked me to “stop working, get away from the computer, and to give it a rest for the day”. I responded with: “this isn’t work, it’s my life.”

In all honestly, I don’t like to think of what I do as “work.” Indeed, there is no denying that what I and many entrepreneurs do on a daily basis is hard work, but to me, it’s more than work. It’s a way of life. Something that I eat, breathe, and sleep.

One of the great things about being an entrepreneur is that we can make things happen 24/7 and we are not confined to a 9 to 5 workday. So if our creative juices are flowing during the late hours of the night, then we can jump right into it and make something happen.

In all reality, I think that the entrepreneur lives a much rougher life than the average person who works a 9 – 5. Personally, I have never experienced so much stress, drama, and worry in my life until becoming an entrepreneur.

But at the same time, I have never experienced so much excitement, joy, and exhilaration any time in my life. I guess it’s a tradeoff, eh?

Entrepreneurship isn’t something that can be turned on an off like the flip of a switch. It’s something that is always on our minds no matter what time of the day. So the second you start to think of it as “work” then you may have a problem.

[…] These statements really give great balance to my last post about thinking of entrepreneurship as a lifestyle and not as “work.” My friends’ thoughts really made me think about my situation as a young entrepreneur. […]

I have to agree with you about this having just spent another night trying to fall asleep after thoughts of business ideas running through my head. There is nothing worse then going to bed at 1:30 am and waking up at 6:50 am… such is the life. I’ll remember it someday and look back saying “How did i do that?”

Ten years your senior I can attest to the importance of your “work” being something you truly enjoy doing. I have worked at many different jobs and have ventured out on my own which has led me to the aforementioned knowledge. While doing what one loves might seem simple and trite it is critical advice for a content existance.

I am a new reader to your blog and look forward to reading more posts.

Lucas: Such is the life, indeed! I wouldn’t have it any other way.

Andrew: Thanks, Andrew. It’s all about doing what you love and following that dream no matter what it takes.
